Somewhat incredibly, the first electric locomotive to haul a train (albeit a single carriage) was built by Robert Davidson in Scotland in 1842. Expensive to run through its one-use-only zinc batteries and ultimately destroyed in preference of steam, ‘Galvani’ nonetheless ran at just under 4mph and demonstrated that electric motors could pull a train.

This free-rolling N Gauge model of the truck-like ‘Galvani’, complete with renditions of his pioneering electric motors, therefore offers something rather different – Era I electric traction. Strangely-prototypical, coupled to the various motorised coaches/trucks also available it offers the novelty of running the ‘great-grandfather’ of all modern rolling stock. Included is a diver figure, to be perched on the roof of the coach…!
