Designed by Robert Stephenson, Invicta was the first locomotive on the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway.
Designed by Robert Stephenson, Invicta was the first locomotive on the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway. As the next engine built by Robert after his iconic Rocket, many developments from the Rainhill winner can be seen in Invicta’s original form, although in 1836 the engine was substantially rebuilt resulting in a noticeably different shape. Invicta became the first ever preserved locomotive when acquired by the South Eastern Railway in the 1840s and today can be found in Whitstable Museum.
This model is of Invicta’s 1836 (and as-preserved) rebuilt form with retrograde single-flue boiler. The tender included is freelance but in the style of the period. Due to its size it is unpowered, but can be ‘motorised’ by coupling to a powered truck (separately available).
Necessary to Complete:
• Driving wheels – 17mm diameter (including flange; without c.16mm as per the Alan Gibson catalogue)
• Coupling rods (various lengths are available via Alan Gibson which could be adjusted or these can be scratchbuilt to suit).
• Loco-tender coupling
• Wire (for piston rods)
• Pins (for rod linkages)
• Tender wheels – 15mm diameter (including flange; without c12.5mm) eg Hornby wagon wheels R8098
• Screw-fit coupling (best to just glue/pin – mounting point included on the loco and tender): Hornby Spares – Coupling Unit and Screws – A1X Terrier – Pack of 1
