Description

Designed by George Stephenson, Locomotion No. 1 remains an icon of the early railways.  Hauling the inaugural train on the Stockton & Darlington Railway of 1825 – the first public railway – it was a notable advance in locomotive design, notably through the use of coupling rods linking the wheels.  The original engine is preserved and there is also a working replica that returned to the main line in 2025 for the bicentenary.

Complete with bespoke ‘plug’ wheels (correctly un-quartered), this scratch aid enables an unpowered free-rolling model engine that can be used with the various motorised coaches/trucks also available to create a complete SDR train.  The motion parts include coupling rod cranks and washers (x2 each) plus ready-made coupling and connecting rods, although the latter are best scratch-built from wire if possible.  NOTE: to successfully fit the printed rods they may need re-drilling and filing to make thinner).  As a bonus it even comes with period-dressed driver, fireman and George Stephenson himself!

Necessary to Complete:
Wire (if scratch-building rods)
Pins (0.5mm for the piston rods and beam connections; 0.6-1mm for the wheel connections)
Weight (the boiler is hollow)
Styrene strip (for feed pump lever and wheel keeper plates)
Fuse wire (for operational feed water pump linkages)
Loco-tender couplings (the method used is at the builder’s discretion)
Graham Farish wagon wheels (x2)
